Ramel Family Farms at the Heirloom Shop

By Devinnie Lynch

Delicious greens and vintage tees! You're not going to be-leaf what they're up to at Ramel Family Farms' (RFF) Heirloom Shop. Located on Historic First Street, the Heirloom Shop is home to a variety of novelty gifts and locally-grown produce. Expect to be greeted with friendly smiles strolling into their family-owned retail store!

As a new business, the Heirloom Shop is a favorite for locals and visitors looking for something fresh and unique. By using a feedback/request system, the shop focuses on customer wants and needs. The retail store sells many items that cannot be found anywhere else in Raton, such as comic books, vinyl, and house plants.

Owners and brothers Hassan and Kayvan Khalatbari were full of beans to open the shop in Raton. A welcoming community and an ample opportunity for growth made the decision easy for the Khalatbari brothers and dedicated staff to operate a 6,000 square foot greenhouse and 50,000 square foot warehouse on an urban farm in Raton. With the addition of 35 hydroponic grow towers, the business will produce up to 20,000 pounds of fresh greens each year.

Their mission is to empower residents and visitors to eat healthy and live well by providing local restaurants with fresh greens, gourmet mushrooms and other organic produce. They currently serve 111 Park Espresso Bar and Gate City Craft Bar in Raton, and Sita's Kitchen and Mutiny Trinidad, Trinidad, Colorado. RFF provides vegetables to Raton and Trinidad Public Schools, and their goal is to provide greens to every school district in Southern Colorado and Northern New Mexico to keep our youth happy.

RFF may be a big operation, but they are small-town proud and believe in keeping the dollar local. They prove so by being an outlet for local farmers and ranchers within a 100-mile radius. In that radius is Yoder Family Farms, who deliver an assortment of goat cheese wheels to the shop. Keep in mind their Pueblo Chile and Garlic Basil Cheese Wheels fly off the shelves, so be the first in line before they're gone.

Fresh baked goods from local bakeries are delivered weekly to the shop. The Lapp Family Bakery supplies RFF with the highly-requested dark rye bread, pies and other pastries. You do not want to miss their strawberry rhubarb, peach, apple, cherry pies, and various cream pies. If that doesn't have your mouth watering, Colie's Cakes & Pastries can fill that void with their sticky buns and almond croissants. Colie's also supplies fresh baked sourdough, ciabatta, and potato rolls.

You too can experience a green thumb by visiting the Heirloom Shop and indulge in delicious farm fresh greens with a 'grab and go' meal they will be serving this summer!
