Spring break is the perfect time for families to explore Raton, New Mexico! From ice cream and coffee shops to towering volcanoes, we have it all here in Raton!

 


Outdoor Adventures & Parks
  • Take a family stroll through Raton’s historic downtown, where wide sidewalks make it easy for little ones to walk alongside. Along the way, enjoy the stunning views of the surrounding mountains and stop by local shops for a quick treat.


  • Climax Canyon National Trail is the perfect spot for families who love hiking and biking. The well-maintained trails offer a mix of easy and moderate paths, leading to breathtaking overlooks that make for great family photos.


  • Keep your eyes peeled for wildlife as you explore Raton and its surrounding natural areas. Deer and elk are always lingering around Raton, they will be hard to miss!


  • Roundhouse Memorial Park is a great place to spend the afternoon playing disc golf. The course is beginner-friendly, making it a fun and active outdoor experience for families of all ages.


  • Pack a picnic and enjoy lunch in one of Raton’s lovely parks. Ripley Park is a local favortie and offers a view of the town, wide open spaces, picnic tables, and a playground that the kiddos will love. Another fun pick in Legion Park, equipped with picnic tables, a small playground, and a big field perfect for playing catch with your pup!


  • Make a splash at the Raton Regional Aquatic Center. With splash pads, slides, a rock wall, and a diving board, it's the perfect place for a family to have some fun in Raton no matter the weather!


  • Take a fishing trip to Sugarite Canyon State Park! Just a short 15 minute drive from Raton can quickly become one of your favorite hiking and fishing spots.



Kid-Friendly Eats & Treats
  • Nothing says vacation like ice cream! Mama K’s offers a variety of flavors that will always bring you back for more! Grab an ice cream and sit outside to enjoy the cool mountain air and views of Historic First Street. 


  • Parents can get their caffeine fix while kids enjoy a tasty meal at 111 Park Espresso Bar. They have a variety of drinks that your kiddos will love like caffeine free frappes, flavored lemonades, and popping pearls that can be added to almost any drink! The food menu also consists of sandwiches, salads, and soups that all families can enjoy! Yes, even the picky kiddos!


  • For those with a sweet tooth, Dulces Encantados is a must-visit. This small shop on First Street has a wide variety of candy to choose from, including homemade caramels and chocolates!


  • If your family loves pizza, head to Bruno’s Pizza & Wings for some yummy pizza, wings, and desert.

  • A trip to The Raton Museum offers a fascinating glimpse into the town’s history. Kids will love exploring the exhibits filled with old photographs, artifacts, and stories of the region’s past.


  • Story hour and special programs at Arthur Johnson Memorial Library provide fun and educational activities for young readers. It’s a great spot to take a break and encourage a love for books.


  • The historic Shuler Theater hosts tours and family-friendly performances throughout the year. Whether you take in a show or just admire the stunning architecture and WPA murals, its always a fascinating place to explore in Raton.

Scenic Views & Landmarks
  • Head to the Raton Sign and Old Raton Pass for an unforgettable view of the city and beyond. This scenic overlook provides a perfect backdrop for family photos and offers a view of the nearby Raton-Clayton Volcanic field. 


  • Capulin Volcano National Monument should be at the top of your must-visit list! You can hike the rim on the volcano to catch a view of 5 different states at the very top!
