Need a fun idea for date night? Do you want to see a shooting star? How about galaxies or nebulas? Well, you might get that opportunity at the Capulin Volcano National Monument’s Dark Sky Festival. This free event is fun for the whole family, as well as educational.
2022 Dark Sky Festival at Capulin
In 2016, Capulin Volcano National Monument was named a Gold Tier Dark Sky Park by the International Dark Sky Association, which means the park is located in one of the darkest areas of the continental US giving pristine views of the night sky. During the day, enjoy a hike around the rim of the volcano with a volunteer as they show you the portion views of four states (New Mexico, Oklahoma, Texas and Colorado).
The Dark Sky Festival is on Friday and Saturday, Sept. 15-16. There will be solar telescopes set up during the day as well as giant telescopes during the night. Your family will be able to learn how to operate telescopes and ask the rangers questions starting at 6:30 p.m. Night sky viewing will begin at 7:30 p.m. and will end at 10:30 p.m.
Milky Way views with family-friendly rangers.
Dark Sky programs may be changed or canceled due to weather. Follow the red lights from the visitor center to the observing area. Wear warm clothing, bring a chair if you like, and be in awe of the clear sky that is in our own backyard!
