One of the best things about visiting Raton, New Mexico, is how affordable it is to enjoy a great time with your family! Since Raton isn't so tourist-heavy, it offers a peaceful, slow-paced experience where you can truly unwind. There’s no need to worry about crowded attractions, long waitlists, or overpriced activities. Instead, you can embrace the charm of this quiet town, exploring outdoor adventures, local history, and pretty views, all at a fraction of the cost of bigger tourist hotspots. Here is the perfect itinerary that makes for a fun and low-cost day.

Our first stop, Pappas Sweet Shop. This has been a local favorite for over 100 years now! Their menu features breakfast burritos, breakfast plates, and just about anything you would want to smother in green or red chile! The yummy breakfast topped with the cozy environment makes for the perfect way to start your day.

After breakfast, head to Sugarite Canyon State Park, just a short drive from Raton. Spend the morning enjoying the beauty of the park with a bit of fishing or kayaking. The park also offers peaceful trails that wind through forests and along the lake, making it a great spot to take the little ones.
Head back to Raton and stop at 111 Park Espresso bar for some coffee and lunch. Their menu consists of sandwiches, salads, and a soup of the day. They also have specialty drinks with or without caffeine. Their friendly staff and warm atmosphere makes for the perfect place to unwind after a morning of fishing and hiking.

Next, we're going to head to Goat Hill. Going towards the old Raton Pass you have two options, enjoying a scenic overlook or going on a geological adventure. One will take you to a scenic overlook of Raton and the star of Bethlehem, the other will take you to the iridium layer, which is perfect for your dino-loving kiddos.

After some geo fun, we're going to go to Capulin Volcano National Monument! Just 30 minutes outside of town, you'll find one of the tallest cinder cones in North America. At the top of the rim, you have a view of 4 different states and the Raton-Clayton volcanic field! The small entrance fee is well worth it for the views and the fascinating history of the volcano.

To end the day off, head to Bruno’s Pizza and Wings for some well deserved pizza and wings. Their menu consists of a variety of toppings and sauces to customize your pizza, 10 different wing flavors, and salads. This is the best way to end your day, just ask anyone!
From outdoor exploration to cozy meals and restful stays, Raton offers a days worth of fun on a budget parents love!
